what happens when you bring together two percussionists who are well-established in the electronic music scene and commission them to produce four tracks exclusively with percussion instruments-with the only requirement being not to deliver any overtly thought-out nerd music? the answer has been provided by sven kacirek and thomas klein on this release.

the berlin-based producer is kicking off his label with a four-track single. while he is perhaps not as name-checked as some of the hardware hawking house heads of modern times, arttu snellman has been working hard at gritty box jams for a good few years now. he first appeared under his arttu guise in 2011 with the nuclear funk and fear diluted singles on royal oak and philpot respectively, and then proceeded to wheel out tunes for 4 lux and chiwax over the ensuing years. prior to the tough-edged pump of his current ventures, you could find snellman indulging in a more laptop-centric kind of practice under the name lump. this more minimalistic, glitchy house fodder could be found on labels such as karloff, morris/audio and süd electronic amongst many others. back in the here and now though, arttu was last spotted on clone jack for daze earlier this year with the rave dogz 12”, and next up he’s taking matters into his own hands. existing fans of arttu will be more than pleased with the heavyweight, crunchy tackle that inhabits cyblo01. this is dynamic business with same heft found on previous releases from snellman, mixed in with the cheeky flair that has always marked his productions out in a crowded marketplace.

argentine producer leonel castillo unveils yet another moniker with this new eponymous 77ks series. remaining the best-kept secret the latin american electronic music scene has brought to us so far, leonel is an icon and at the same time virtually unknown. a stylistic chameleon and an ultra talented jack-of-all-trades, he is hard to pinpoint, and even harder to categorize. surfacing at random, he’s been releasing music as leonel castillo and under various aliases – arnold slab, boeing or unknown artista are some of his monikers – on labels as diverse as ilian tape, sushitech, airdrop and his own imprint groovear.

electronic music has always had a special affiliation with space, and the sounds of the cosmos. an inherent love of all things sci-fi, galactic and otherworldy has always been a common thread, especially with techno producers, and so its always a pleasure to come into greater contact with the science of these sounds when creating new music. project alma is a new collaboration between lucianos cadenza records label and the alma sounds initiative that bridges two sets of individual passions, that of lucianos love for music, and alma astronomer antonio hales love of the universe.

juan ramos lives on planet earth but channels voices from the aether. this is his first offering for the esp institute. on side a, last of the natives shows us just what we’re dealing with, a master manipulator of sound and consciousness. juan culls the toughest kick drums and thickest latex bass slaps from a deep burial in our psyche and peppers them with alien chants and fleeting electronic flutes—a combustible sense of spontaneity that may at first appear chaotic but after fully immersed in juan’s demented world, we find ourselves willfully under his control. on side b, enemy of enemy is friend also sets off from a disorienting place where a slow progression of acid, shakers and toms takes a good minute to allow us some footing around the groove. once settled into his sophisticated rhythm, juan opens the door to a glorious combination of chords, clanking guitars, shakers that scrub back and forth and the occasional smear of paranormal synth. we at the esp institute are enamored by juan’s seemingly infinite skill for crafting mood and extracting optimism from darkness, but seriously, what color speedotm should she wear this summer?

springing up from the osaka underground club music scene in 2006, hino is a rhythm master, intimately examining and extending pulses and grooves in his various projects. ypy is hinos long-running rhythmic solo dna lab, in which he investigates impulsion and propulsion, using drum machines and synthesizers in an organic and vital manner to create living and evolving percussive biosystems which are more than electronic music etudes.

after showcasing the debut releases from the high on wye quintet (magic mountain high, soulphiction and steevio) and monoak, the freerotation label returns with a various artists 12” featuring four more artists intrinsically linked by the annual festival. anthony child, aka surgeon, has been a regular fixture since first appearing at freerotation in 2011. his recent exploration of modular synthesis and use of the buchla music easel has found a home in the ambient yurt at the festival, and equally has manifested in album projects such as 2015’s electronic recordings from maui jungle vol 1. “unconscious fearless determination” follows on from this more experimental, less dancefloor-focused side to child’s work, while still pulsing with the techno fundamentals that quickly defined him back in the mid ‘90s. duckett hails from north wales, and has been a key part of the freerotation fabric since the beginning of the event. after some releases on mindtours, mindyourhead and sthlmaudio back in the mid-‘00s, his music has started to reach a new audience through releases on untilmyheartstops and a clutch of lauded live performances. “breaks my heart when i remember that day” captures the alien synthesis and emotional heft that singles duckett out as such a remarkable artist. steevio is the co-founder of freerotation and mindtours records, responsible for a huge swathe of techno releases reaching back to the ‘90s. as well as his releases on mindtours, he has recently appeared on untilmyheartstops and in collaboration with pev on schmorgabsord, and is set to appear on russ gabriel’s new label rivers of groove. with its expressive swells of off-kilter melody and snaking drum lines, “pendulum” continues the thread of exploration steevio has been following on his journey into experimental modular techno. tom ellis has been prolifically issuing forth material in a soul-enriched space in between house, techno and funk for more than ten years. from running the acclaimed trimsound label to releasing albums and singles on telegraph, archipel, hartchef discos and more recently ethereal sound to name but a few, tom’s recorded work and immersive live performances continue to reach out to new moods and timbres. “as a take” finds tom at his most reflective, layering on dubby effects and organic instrumentation in a truly meditative end to the ep.

our latest looking for mushrooms ep comes to us from a collaboration between long time dirt crew resident tigerskin and gifted jazz pianist and composer grambow. we first heard from grambow when his fluid key stylings featured on tigerskins faint in 2015. the title track is a suspenseful and moody journey, lead by live double bass from feature artist das eb. building in intensity with tigerskins warm production and steady percussive instrumentation until grambows live lead on a gritty synth growls in over the top. a true modern electronic classic as far as we are concernred. tsukiji is a playful deep house groover. balmy tuned percussion and shaken highs roll along under the light hearted piano which cruises along throughout the whole tropically touched endeavour. this track has party written all over it! octocat is a tougher italo disco tainted work out, tightly programmed live and analogue percussive elements push along, while wailing keys lick over a tenacious grunting bass. you can really taste and feel the long studio sessions the guys had to compose this great track. it is so much more than generic dance music. red fox is a divine culmination of the pairs compositional prowess and dance music knowhow. a cinematic and spirited house track that glides and glistens via delicate piano, plucky percussive riffs, bright strings and woodwinds. we are very honoured to release this outstanding musical release by tigerskin and grambow.

deep love is the first vinyl release by stefano pozzi, dj producer and musician. it’s very difficult to define his sound: his creative process led him to merge several genres in a very original way. the artist shows us a great talent combining different electronic styles from deep house to soulful house, new jazz and chill out music. stefano is also a guitar player. with his releases, he shows us how to bring guitar sounds together with electronic music in a brilliant way. in this 12 inch ep, that could be defined as deep house, the artist has worked to merge various elements of house music: the warm sound of a moog organ with a deep drum kick, the use of hypnotic and rhythmic vocal samples, the presence of many jazz and soul contaminations due to the acoustic guitar.

2016 is shaping to be a fantastic year for rebirth records, the 10th year anniversary and the 100th release…to celebrate this special date the label owner shield and his right arm robytek get in the studio to collaborate with two of the most innovative figures of the end of 70s / early 80s. the a side is the the pyramids with isabelle antena, french singer and songwriter, founding member of electro-samba pioneers antena. in the 1990s she also led another group, the powaga sisters, for three albums between until 2004. alongside these projects she maintained a solo music career, selling over a million albums and earning musical acclaim across the globe. from camino del sol (1982) to bossa super nova (2010), her cool latin, bossa, jazz and funk vibes have delighted ears and feet worldwide. the pyramids is something really special, a cosmic and balearic song with a timeless meaning, with the collaboration of martin ditcham (sade s percussionist) for the drum and paolo mantini, a real italian talent, for the bass and chords. the aa side is now, a collaboration with salvatore principato (sal p.) and dennis young, known as the vocalist and marimba/percussionist of (for the legendary early 80 s nyc band liquid liquid) seminal nyc minimalist-funk band liquid liquid. the experimental sounding band emerged from new york city s vibrant downtown scene in 1981, developing their own unique sound which they called big beat, a fusion of irresistible basslines, junkyard percussion and urgent, free-flowing lyrics. the group s successes included club hits such as cavern (sampled by grandmaster flash in the making of white lines), bellhead and optimo in addition to sold-out concerts worldwide. sal p and dennis still explore today new ways of writing & performing music. now is the experimental way to combine the live drums played by snacks (the berlin based duo rene corbett & aljoscha babel), with the electronic world and the unique musical textures from sal p and dennis young.

bar musica is a brand new label that promises to inject plenty of charm and originality into the underground house and techno world. the first release kicked up quite a storm from label owner bartolomeo, and the second release features a trio of great originals by j paraguai, with a remix from long time electronic talent bruno pronsato. rumba is up first and is a full fat, corrugated house track with tribal percussion, punchy drums that swing down low and afro vocals. it is a dynamite groove with roughshod tin pot hits that are carefully treated and bring a lovably wild side to the track. thesoundsays founder and berlin based new yorker bruno pronsato has been on the fringes of the underground for more than a decade with inventive eps and lps on labels like hello? repeat and bosconi. his remix is stripped back to a forceful and rubbery techno groove. blistered synths rip up the middle and spooky voices, trippy effects and manic loops all make it a freaky late night or after-hours tune that will send floors wild. ble is then another j paraguai, and this one is again unhinged and urgent, with intense synths exploding above shuffling, tightly knotted minimal drums and sweeping pads. it’s pure wtf music for brave djs and dancers and is a truly original production. then last original atles is rugged and impactful in the way in combines house and techno into new ideas. it is stripped back to little chopped loops that bury deep in your brain and have you in a trance in no time. as such, it rounds out a fine ep and keeps this exciting new label going off in great style.

dead fader - john cohen is surely one of the most overlooked voices making electronic music today. his approach to making honest and emotive electronic music has pushed the boundaries in recent years and challenged so many concepts and traditions within the music industry and scenes. but also without loosing sight of a bigger picture and finding a balance between emotions, technology, politics and expression.

early pioneers of the german new wave music scene, din a testbild were formed in 1978 by mark eins and gudrun gut (former member of einstürzende neubauten, mania d. and malaria!). din a testbild played a significant role in defining the avant-garde music of berlin. legendary is their partecipation at the festival genialer dilletanten in 1981. mixed and produced by klaus schulze on his own record label innovative communication in 1980, programm 1 was a favourite in the playlists of the italian cosmic dj heroes daniele baldelli and dj mozart. this first vinyl repress celebrates the 35th anniversary of this classic electronic album.

music is about discourse: it’s about ideas, about the intellectual project. anyone can build a “beat”, but not everybody can produce an interesting argument for it. this implies the idea of romanticism as a notion of tradition and respect for certain rules. romanticism understood as virtuosity in the manipulation of art production tools. virtuosi of their own methodology. certain pedigree of virtuosity is definitely needed…but in many regards it also remains an extremely conventional formalism, which is at the core of every artist. it doesn’t matter if you have to piss around in the subterranean electronic music trenches for over two decades. a true pioneer simply has to live with that sort of dichotomy. here there are two good examples.

hot on the heels of kess kill s launch featuring cute heels, rivet proudly presents kess02 by xaõ seffcheque. while kess01 was in no way a compromise, it was still a very intentional symbiosis between the distilled essence of kess kill and contemporary electronic music. on kess02 we go straight to the core of the kess kill sound and aesthetic with three breathtaking songs by xaõ seffcheque. a contemporary of liaisons dangereuses and d.a.f., düsseldorf based artist xaõ produced some extremely singular music in the late 1970s and early 1980s, which makes for a very proud first reissue for kess kill. this is music so unparalleled that making comparisons is completely redundant. think jacked up post-punk with manic rhythmic tendencies and you’re halfway there. qu est-ce qu il fait chaud!

with his project fred und luna musician rainer buchmüller (sugar ray buckmiller) from karlsruhe, germany is paying tribute to his favourite electronic oriented music by using its characteristics like repetition and beautiful melodies, putting them in a contemporary context and preserving their subtle and seductive charm. fred und luna play their self described elektrokraut (concerning songs that are basically kraut mixed with electronic elements) and krautelektro (which is elektro mixed with kraut elements). they live in karlsruhe which, like düsseldorf, lies next to the river rhine. perhaps karlsruhe is the new (neu) düsseldorf, with fred und luna (as pioneers/vanguard).

mixing abstract hip-hop and house, blutch s style is mind-blowing and striking, with touches of groove and heat. borrowing from pépé bradock, francis inferno orchestra,cuthead, andrés, shigeto and massive attack, blutch has forged a unique musical identity all along his career, always with this strong desire to combine several universes into a single entity.
in january 2015 blutch revealed his creative genius with his first ep, equilibrium. he will soon revisit a voluptuous set mixing trip hop, the softness of electronica and a hypnotic deephouse. requilibrium unites 9 artists in one project that represents blutch’ diverse musical spectre. friends, idols, people who we loved to collaborate with, spend time with, get to know better. the r stands for the remix, the reinterpretation of blutch’ ep equilibrium. each artist gives new life to one of the tracks, spicing them up to their liking. cuthead transforms « skyview » in a straight-up house floor killer while maxime dangles takes « chocolates & hamburgers » to gloomy, cold electronic heights. between these two extremes the music gradually and cleverly evolves track by track. melodiesinfonie opens up in complete serenity with his take on « a. » which takes us straight into summer with our feet in the sand. tito wun follows up perfectly with his version of “wildstar” that is stacked with groovy samples. next up is keroué, member of the band fixpensill. he puts his rhymes on a stellar edit by ywnwa. jenovah choses to take “deep diving” on a bass-driven path while pavane sees and raises that with an orchestral version of anyoma. it’s up to the brothers ark & pit spector to close out the ep by taking « elis » into deeper territory.

basil & rogers is a sleazy, california disco duo made up of heru (dj) johnny basil and body rogers. basil, a multi-instrumentalist, long-time record collector, and energy healer is a man that s been making music for a long time under many different guises and in many different styles. heru avenger (acid/psych rock), non stop (electronic/free jazz), baast (kraut rock/jazz funk), and kandi jones (slut rock) are just a few of his projects, past and present. most of this music has been around for the entirety of the 90 s and 2000 s without being heard because despite basil s outspoken appearance (described by many as looking like iggy pop s twin brother and would never be caught wearing a t-shirt no matter the location) he s very quiet about his musical output. body rogers is also part of the non stop group and is a master of electronics and engineering. on the basil & rogers project the two have made a disco 12- that is influenced by classic-era dance music while still being completely unique and far from conforming. it s crazy, it s sexy, and it s sleazy. tune in .

repress 2018... following on from isaac tichauer s street lessons release, the mysterious loft records calls in the talents of bicep, hackman, dorsia and lancelot for a choicest remix package. the french express signing turned many heads when he dropped his lauded devotion lp back in 2012, and since then the australian producer has risen to become a formidable name within modern day electronic music. therefore it s only fitting that an all-star cast were chosen to remix his latest release on loft records. bicep, who had an enormous 2015 with releases on aus and 50 weapons, begin the release with the only remix of higher level - a break infused cut fashioned for the dancefloor with a penetrating melody, echoing vocals and soaring pads. the first of three street lessons remixes then comes from hackman, known for his work on 20/20 vision and futureboogie, who incorporates serene synths and subtle stabs to transform the original into a quirky renovation with elements of funk. london duo dorsia then step up with a cacophony of sounds that build in suspense with the introduction of fuzzy atmospherics, until fellow australian and w&o street tracks artist lancelot generates a cavernous dub containing the originals infectious hook whilst implementing resounding rimshots and wobbly keys.

martin landskys long association with poker flat recordings continues with yet another exquisitely realized three-tracker. long since a staple of the underground electronic music scene in berlin and europe in general, landsky’s deft ear for dynamics and sense of off kilter dance-floor knowledge continues to do the business for djs and dancers alike. after the great success of vol.1 , landsky now presents ‘ekko traxx vol.2&#8242,,,. ‘echo my head’ is the perfect example - driving, focussed and funky, yet with a subtle undercurrent that keeps you slightly out of your comfort zone and locked in to the groove. weird night contains a spooky, discordant synth that raises the tension over and over, before giving way to a hard driving rhythm track that will see the late night heads fully losing themselves classic landsky style. that organ has a similar aesthetic, chunky rhythms and bass pulses for the floor, and synth stabs and melodic hooks that keep the track in constant forward motion.

gone beyond. that s what they say when an (astro) pilot crashes to earth and takes the journey into the big sky. when juan trippe took that last flight little did he know that his re-incarnated self would be an electronic pioneer. in tandem with his co-pilot guido zen (his own father also a pilot) and kyle martin (from the land of light) they formed brain machine and scaled the highest peaks to bring back music both unearthly and intensely human. are we all not stardust anyway? this music proves it, takes you out flips you over and rolls you in stardust. don t try and think it through, make sense of it, grasp it - just wander in wonder and bask in beauty. get lost again.

after releases on lobster theremin and opal tapes, u.k based techno experimentalist manse releases the first 12” on his own imprint - mns. “cymbal shudder” is a three track exploration into the realm of drum heavy, blown out techno. distorted percussive sequences clatter above a red lining low end and swampy electronic ambience. compiled of chaotic jumbled elements, the outcomes are merged together and run straight on to reels of withered tape.
